In business, especially in SMEs and startups, the most important thing is not doing what feels most comfortable, but doing what moves the company forward at that particular moment.
The smaller the company, the more carefully it must choose its battles. Resources are limited, and it is impossible to do everything at once. That is why focusing on what truly matters is one of the most important skills an entrepreneur can develop.
Most of us recognize this phenomenon in our daily work. Pleasant tasks get done easily, while uncomfortable or challenging ones are postponed until some day. For some, it is sales and cold outreach. For others, it is administrative work or difficult personnel discussions.
Ironically, these are often the very tasks that have the greatest impact on business growth.
My Rule of Three
During my years as a full-time entrepreneur, I developed a simple system.
Every Sunday evening, I planned the coming week and identified the three most important tasks for each day. I wrote them down in my calendar, and my goal was simple: complete them before the day was over.
The biggest benefit of this approach was not increased productivity. It was clarity. Once I had decided what mattered most, I no longer had to spend energy wondering whether I was working on the right things. The decision had already been made.
And when those three key tasks were completed, I felt the day had been a success, regardless of how many emails I had answered or how many meetings I had attended.
Productivity is not about doing more things. It is about doing the right things.
Top performance is rarely the result of doing more than everyone else. More often, it comes from the ability to focus on what matters most. Focus means having the discipline to postpone or even ignore the less important tasks.
